Success can be easily defined as achieving what you set out to achieve. Each of us, however, has a personal definition of what success looks like in their specific career. There are many ways to reach your goals, and How-To guides and 6-Step strategies abound to help get you there. The truth is, however, that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for success. No matter what the goal, reaching it calls for hard work, creativity, determination, and a myriad of other positive traits.
A difficult topic, conflict does not make it into many of these guides. It is, nonetheless, an integral part of success. As you strive for what you need to achieve your goals, you will find conflict — whether major or quickly passing — accompanies you every step of the way. Learning to deal with it is therefore an integral part of the journey to success.
- Determine Importance – If the conflict relates to a peripheral issue that will resolve itself in time, let it go. On the other hand, if the conflict pertains integrally to your goal, confront it head on until you resolve it.
- Understand Both Sides – Regardless of whether you are 100% certain you are right, take some time to comprehend each angle. In doing this, you educate yourself, understand possible options, and makes your argument stronger.
- Compromise – Although this idea has slowly become synonymous with weakness, the truth is that resisting compromise often brings progress to a complete stop. Be willing to take a step back if it means taking two more forward tomorrow.
- Give It Time – Important conflicts take time to resolve. Never be afraid to prolong conflict if it means that you can reach an appropriate solution in the end.
Regardless of your goal, conflict will be a constant companion. Learning to successfully deal with it will therefore take you important steps toward your goals. Following these four steps cannot eliminate conflict, it will, however, provide a framework for diffusing the conflict and even making progress because of it.
