Oftentimes, it’s incredibly transparent to see the direction in which technology is taking us. From genetic splicing to robots in healthcare, there is often a trail of science which leads us to current and future technologies. Occasionally, technological advances blind side us. This seems to be the case for some hopeful scientists over at The Mayo Clinic.
Though the study had been on the radar for nearly two years, finally, scientists from The Mayo Clinic teamed up with the voice analytic experts from Beyond Verbal to identify correlations between markers in patients’ voices and possible health issues. The prime study: cardiovascular disease.
The study consisted of 150 participants- 120 having been referred for heart disease testing, the remaining participants had no signs of heart disease. The results showed one particular voice feature which increased the likelihood for coronary heart disease 19 fold. 13 additional voice features were found which also correlated with CAD. The results held true regardless of age, gender or other factors which might skew results. Researchers found the correlations most clear when participants were ask to describe a negative past experience.
Yuval Mor, CEO of Beyond Verbal, stated that the vocal markers associated with heart disease is not something that the human ear can hear, and furthermore, cannot be described or explained. Mor also indicated that voice analytics could also be used in the study of Autism, Parkinson’s disease and other diseases which are not completely understood
Beyond Verbal currently has two apps on the market for consumers to utilize. The apps are advertised to evaluate emotional well-being in consumers. It is the hope that with more testing, an app can be produced which could act as a supplemental, non-invasive way to screen for cardiovascular disease. Additionally, this type of app could be used to monitor the cardiovascular well-being of patients who have already been diagnosed with CAD.
Such technological advances could mean a big step forward in the process of diagnosing certain diseases.
