You show up everyday, work hard, and in general go above and beyond what your position calls for. So you’ll definitely get that promotion, right? Maybe not. Getting promoted often takes more than just a solid work ethic. Here are some tips for how to have career success by taking the right steps to get that next promotion:
Socialize at work
As corny as it might seem, going to office events like an office party or dinner can actually make or break your chances of getting a promotion. Making time to get to know your co-workers and supervisors outside of your normal work setting gives you a chance to know what’s going on behind the scenes. It also gives you a chance to show off more of your personality and get to know your co-workers and supervisors on a personal level. Striking up a casual conversation with your boss at the company picnic could do more for your career than working for him day in and day out.
Be proactive in problem solving
Don’t wait for your boss to tell you to do something. When you see a problem, step in with a solution, or at the very least ask what you can do to help fix it. Executives are successful because they can see a problem coming and step in to resolve it. They don’t sit around waiting for someone to tell them what to do. Demonstrate that you have this type of leadership skill by stepping in as soon as you see or know of a problem.
Move outside your comfort zone
If you want to get ahead in your career, you’re going to need to do things that extend beyond your current position. Volunteer to lead a project that nobody else wants to tackle, even if it isn’t your expertise. Doing this demonstrates that you are willing to step up for the good of the company, and also showcases your ability to research and learn on your own. Of course, ask for help when you need it to avoid making crucial mistakes that will end up costing the company time and money.
People who get promoted generally do more than show up and do a good job. They demonstrate their ability to learn and grow through their initiative, positive attitude, and willingness to do whatever they can to help the company succeed. For more ideas on what it takes to get promoted, contact us.
